2019 Pan American Games: Men’s Team Final & Individual Qualification

Last night I live tweeted during ESPN’s coverage of both Subdivisions of the men’s competition. I haven’t written live hits in over fifteen years, and I assure you I realize how rusty I am. If I missed a routine, I apologize.

I also realized how few users on Twitter follow men’s gymnastics compared to the women.

I’m transcribing my tweets to this blog post, adding formatting in places, editing tweets only when either you would never know what I was trying to say or my OCD kicks in grammar-wise.

Subdivision 1 (ARG, BRA, CAN, CHI, DOM, ECU, ESA, GUA, MEX, PUR, URU)

Ahhhhh I hear Bart! Thank Prod!!

Canada, Argentina, Chile, El Salvador, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Uruguay, Puerto Rico, Guatamala, and BRAZIL!!

Mexico starting on high bar.

Tomas González in MG1 starting on floor. 🤩

Canada on rings.

Argentina on vault, KJC discussing how bouncy the podium landing is.

Mixed group on pommels. Bless their hearts starting there.

Rotation 1

Joel Alvarez (CHI) on FX, 3/1 twist, double tuck, front double full, split Japanese press, super clean routine & landings, V hold, RO 2/1, back 1.5 + front 1/1, back 2.5 dismount

Porto PB, Tippett, Back straddle cur, piked Moy to L, piked double, step

Alvarez 5.0/7.8 -0.1, 12.8

PUR on PH, Wu, Magyar, Sivado, triple Russian dismount

Was that a triple Russian? Looked weird.

ARG – kas 1.5 twist

Corrale, Mexico, tak-1/2 huge Tkatchev, tkatchev 1/2, endo, double layout 1/1

Canada rings, Z Clay, L cross, Maltese, yamawaki t&p, Back giant, wow, kicked rings on tucked double double and fell.

Damn, his dowel grip got caught on the ring, scary.

Bart praising the host broadcasters unlike yesterday lol

Nunez on high bar for Mexico, Yamawaki, tak-1/2, tucked Kovacs, huge, Endo with flexed feet, stalder, hop 1/1 way past vertical, double layout 1/1, so clean

So far everyone is doing clean, non-scary gymnastics.

Cormier for Canada on rings, kip to Maltese, Back uprise Maltese, straddle planche, shoot handstand, front giant, piked and tucked Yamawakis, press handstand, tucked double double, very nice clean routine again!

Brazil athlete on pbars, peach hs, straddle front to upper arms, Tippett, Healy, Back toss to one rail, double pike

Gymnast from Ecuador, tucked double double, almost sat second pass, 2 1/2 to front to front full, another combo pass, RO double twist, split press, now he slows down lol, crazy triple full but landed it.

First rotation done, so far I haven’t jumped out of my skin with fear, great job everyone!

Brazil leading because of course they are.

Canada on vault, warming up.

Brazil 42.2, Argentina 41.2, Mexico

Jk last Canada score not inputted so no one knows anything.

Rotation 2

Justin Karstadt from UMN on vault for Canada, DTY is 4.8 for the men, hop to the side but secure and clean

Cory Paterson, former Hawkeye, also DTY, great vault, big step, but right down the middle

Arthur Nory on HB for Brazil, jk Sam Zakutney, Roche vault, barely made it after crashing in warmups, 14.05 for Cory

Nory – endo-1/1, tak-1/2, layout tkatchev, straddle tkatchev, tkatchev-1/2, off on Winkler, I think the high bar just broke!

Córdoba on Pb for Argentina, Brazil Coaches trying to fix the hb, shouldn’t there be equipment reps on the floor helping with that?

Caio Souza, Nory will go at the end, tkatchev layout to tkatchev-1/2, kolman, tak-1/2 to yamawaki to geinger, layout double double AWESOME

God, can you imagine going knowing the high bar is being held together with…?

Screen froze for me, but audio still working, no comment from KJC or Bart so it must be just me.

Barretto on high bar for Brazil, loose looking Ono turn, layout tkatchev + straddle tkatchev + straddle tkatchev 1/2, now a layout tkatchev, FTDL he’s pumped

Slo mo awkward hug on the world feed lol

Souza 13.85 on hb 7.75 E

Nory again, I want my hair to look like his, I’m glad he got a redo. 14.05 for Barretto, same skills obviously, big leg break on Tak-1/2, tkatchev sequence, caught Winkler this time, he’s fighting, DTDL, GOOD FOR HIM

Canada had a great vault rotation & passed Brazil. Such a clean and watchable meet so far!

My iPad needs to learn the words “Tak” and “Moy”.

Rotation 3

Porto on floor for Brazil, front double pike, tucked double front, front double full to front layout, seal press, missed his fourth pass, RO double twist, RO 2.5 twist to end.

I, like everyone else, hate the trend of staying in the same diagonal in the start of the routine.

Karstadt on pbars, stuck double pike.

Fabian de Luna on pommel horse, Wu & Roth, decent form

Cormier CAN Bhavsar, straddle front to upper arm, tuck double front off

Nory on floor-y? Not funny? Not sorry.

Zakutney on pbars, cast up to whippit, ugh fall on the bars, Tippelt, he’s in survival mode, Bhavsar, double pike, small hop

Cournoyer 13.5 on pbars

Scoring system is frozen, which is fine, not that this is a big meet or anything.

Corral on pommels! Magyar, sivado, triple Russian, Roth, 1/1 pirouette off, NICE

Zanetti on floor, pike double front, front layout + double front tuck, FTDL, Maltese on floor, Japanese press, FTDT, Ruggeri style round-off, double Arabian, also did a combo pass that ended with a front 1/1.

Zanetti apparently owns a CrossFit gym in Brazil. WHY!!???

Jose Lopez from PUR, let’s keep the non scary trend going please, great job, kas 1.5

2nd vault for Lopez, make us proud, should be a roche, yay I’m learning the vault scoreboard numbers, big step but color me impressed

  1. Brazil 125.300
  2. Canada
  3. Mexico
  4. Argentina

Moving on to Rotation 4. People who use flashes at gymnastics meets should be destroyed by lasers from the ceiling.

Rotation 4

Brazil on pommels, mount with scissors, very choppy, Magyar and sivado, press off.

Justin Karstadt, yamawaki, stalder, crazy 1/1 pirouette, tkatchev 1/2, FTDL, interesting technique on his in-bar skills

Nory struggled on horse in the first half of the routine but didn’t fall, recovered for the Roth & triple Russian dismount

Cormier, layout yamawaki, tak half, tkatchev sequence, endo, stalder, DTDL, hop, but I’m impressed by the Canadian men.

Souza hits hit knee on the horse on a Wu and falls on the ensuing Russian, triple Russian dismount.

Daniel Corral on rings, Maltese cross, cross, cast back uprise hs, t&p yamawakis to cross, back giants, double layout with giant step back

8.35 E for Cormoyer

11.8 for Souza, 6.0 E

Cory Paterson, Ono turn, jam, tak 1/2, tkatchev sequence, crazy front giant out of tkatchev 1/2, flexed feet everywhere DTDL, stuck

13.1 for Corral

Fabian de Luna, front giant, tucked yamawaki, cross from uprise, planche, fall on dismount!

Didn’t fall on dismount but it was low with a huge lunge forward.

After 4 rotations:

  1. Brazil 165.050
  2. Canada 164.875
  3. Mexico 155.050
  4. Argentina 150.700

Rotation 5

Karstadt on floor, front layout + front double full, press handstand, low double Arabian, Back 1.5 to front-1/2, second press handstand, RO double full, fall on 2.5 twist, this will be a super low score.

Porto on rings, uprise straddle planche, front giant, p&t yamawaki, 1/2 in, fullout dismount, very simple routine

11.55 for Karstadt, Paterson now, double Arabian second pass, 2.5 to barani, front double full to front tuck 1/1, triple Russian to seal press, RO triple full that surprised KJC lol

Oh lord, Canada finishes on ph 🙈

Rojo (MEX) hs Rudi vault, very nice!!

13.6 for Paterson, I thought the scores were still frozen, Kathy feeling the beat of the arena music lol

Kas 1.5 for Fabian de Luna

Souza on rings as my feed freezes. 🙄

And we’re back p&t yamawakis to straddle planche, iron cross, back giant, front giant, tuck double double, loving Bart pointing out that skills aren’t always correctly named.

Sam Zakutney on floor for Canada, tucked double double, front layout to double front, not even close, 2.5 barani, very crooked, Japanese press, nice and low, RO 2/1, full-in dismount, too bad because that’s a great routine

Zanetti on rings, bwd roll to Maltese, t&p yamawakis to Maltese, bounce cross, FTDL, NCAA worthy celebration, how can you not love this guy?

Israel Chiribogaon from Ecuador on high bar, piked tkatchev, tkatchev, jam, tak-1/2 nowhere near vertical, hop on dismount.

15.0 for Zanetti on rings!! 🤩🤩

Great DTDL from the Ecuadorian.

Perez on high bar for Puerto Rico, yamawaki, layout tkatchev, sloppy tak-1/2, poor form on jam and Stalder but gorgeous FTDL, strong finish.

I like the PUR singlets, well done Turn Gymnastics!

Jose Lopez, yamawaki, kolman, kovacs, tkatchev, stalder, endo, please point your feet, almost hit feet on dismount, too bad the second half of the routine came apart, the beginning was great!

Rotation 6

Nory punching himself in the face for good luck?

Last rotation, Nory on vault. DTY, small hop, slightly off to the side.

Paterson on pommels, scissor 1/2, Moore, Wu, sivado, 1/1 pirouette off, flexed feet abounding

Karstadt, original scissor hop all the way down the horse, elegant extension, great routine.

Zanetti on vault, roche, one big almost split leap forward

Yurchenko 2.5 for Porto, big step out, second vault upcoming

Saw Paterson’s score for a literal nanosecond.

Porto’s second vault, kas full, small step, very nice

13.9 for Karstadt on horse

Impressive 14.3 for Porto on vault

Cormier, great scissor hs sequence, triple Russian, excited group of guys, good for them! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

Issac Nunez (MEX), pbars, giant, diamadov, problem now in survival mode, straddle front to upper arm, terrific Bhavsar, Tippelt, double pike

Daniel Villafonte, Argentina, rings. Bwd roll to Maltese, cross, uprise cross, uprise handstand, t&p yamawaki to Maltese, uprise planche, sloppy FTDL dismount

Gustavo Cumali (BOL) OOB on triple full, front 2/1, double tuck, short, RO double full, bounces OOB, press handstand, 2.5 twist OOB

Villafonte scores 13.45

Molinari from Argentina on rings, uprise planche, yamawakis, cross, front giant, FTDL, small hop

Cumali scores a 10.35 on floor

Lots of Turn singlets on the arena floor tonight!

After Subdivision 1:

AA Standings: 1. Mariano BRA 82.200 2. Cournoyer CAN 81.900 3. Corral 81.650 4. Souza BRA 81.550

Team standings: 1. Brazil 250.450 2. Canada 246.725 3. Mexico 239.750 4. Argentina 222.200

Subdivision 2 (COL, Costa Rica, CUB, JAM, Peru, USA, VEN)

Karl Ziehn was just shown as the head coach of Team U.S.A. 🤩

250.450 is the score to beat…Bart & KJC already throwing shade at the faulty scoring system in the last rotation.

Peru has entered the building.

Cuba starting on floor, Peru on rings, USA on vault, Venezuela on pommels, mixed group on pbars featuring the Jamaicans Beckford & Faulk, and the Republican of “I looked down at the wrong time” will be starting on high bar.

Oh wow, the US men could use their routines here in place of competing at U.S. Championships, Suzuki is definitely competing in Kansas City.

Rotation 1

First Cuban on floor looking strong, hops on every landing, Japanese press, 2.5 twist is a popular dismount here.

NICE DTY from Breckenridge!! 14.3 9.5 E score!

Cameron Bock: Kas 1.5

First athlete from Colombia on high bar, yamawaki and tkatchev, stalder, tak-1/2, perfect DTDL!

Brody Malone, kas 1.5 is excellent, so far so good for USA

Colombia’s Martinez, stalder, jam, full, fall on dismount

Colombia on high bar, I can’t catch a single damn name, eagle grip Endo, DTDL, stuck cold

Randy Leru, Cuba – punch double front tuck mount, triple full to end. OOB and not the hardest routine.

I’m hoping for one Cuban to chuck at least one outlandish skill today, doesn’t anyone respect tradition? 🤪

Just a 6.65 on rings for Peru’s Luis Pizzaro? I’ve followed him on Instagram for, like, ever, so he’s practically family.

Leru 13.15 on floor

Leon Prada, Peru, FTDT dismount

Gabriel(??) on PH, aaaand my feed froze. I can’t with these names, some pike and flexed feet on his circles, nice dismount.

Aguero(?) from Peru on rings, kip to Maltese, short, another short hold, back giant, tucked yamawaki to L, tucked 1/2 in full out dismount, large step to the side.

My feed froze again.

Fuenmayor VEN, wow double pirouette on PH then a fall! 🙈

Moreto, Peru – uprise planche, uprise L, planche, shoot to handstand, t&p yamawaki, short hs, half in full out dismount, overall not much D score for Peru.

USA in second behind Brazil after the the first event.

Rotation 2

My feed keeps freezing, missed Grant on PB

Moreto on vault – Yurchenko 1.5, very very clean

Colombian on floor – short triple full, front double full to full, double tuck, Rudi, split Japanese press, Manna! Back double full, mandatory 2.5 twist dismount

14.0 for Breckenridge, 13.7 for Moreto

Randy Leru, great scissor to handstand, triple Russian dismount

I never usually watch commercials, I’d forgotten how dumb they are. I’m looking at you Land Rover.

Malone: Healy, diamadov, stutz, double pike

Bart acknowledging Stanford beating Oklahoma at NCAAs.

Neff on pbars, peach hs, peach to L support, stutz on one bar, glide jam press on one rail, double pike, small struggle in the middle of the routine.

Hearing about how accomplished these athletes are, meanwhile I feel accomplished if I make my bed.

Beckford JAM, I’d call that a Voronin, not a yamawaki, way too piked, kovacs, kolman, quast(!) DTDL, not very clean, but super aggressive

USA leading Brazil!

Rotation 3

Genki on HB for USA, tak-1/2, short of vertical, tkatchevs, DTDL

Fuenmayor on vault, kas-1/1, big step

Breckenridge, yamawaki to tie get, straddle tkatchev, piked tkatchev, FTDL stuck. Missed part of the routine as I put “Tkatchev” on my copy/paste

Super clean pommels routine for Venezuela.

Neff: Yamawaki, Endo 1/1, layout tkatchev to layout tkatchev-1/2! DTDL with a step

Martinez COL off on Wu, triple russian

Neff: 13.05

Acuna on FX, Costa Rica, full in, triple full, Back 1.5 to front layout, back double twist, seal press hs, front tuck full to barani, 2.5 twist

Dude, I can see you boxer briefs.

Malone HB: Yamawaki, I didn’t want team USA to make me jump!

Ugh, that sucks, Kolman, another fall on layout tkatchev, @katharineumm must be dying.

Another attempt at layout tkatchev and fall, this is a train wreck, poor guy

Fourth fall, make it stop, tak-1/2, FTDL

Beckford JAM: Floor, missed beginning, Twitter mourning Brody’s HB, triple Russian to seal press, back 2.5, double Arabian to end!

I feel so bad for Brody and Karl, that was every gymnast/coaches worst nightmare.

Rotation 4

Suzuki FX, joined in progress, cmon guys, back 1.5 to front full…ugh. Very short on triple full.

And a fall on his mount OOB in replay. Crap.

And a fall for Leru on vault – who turned up the gravity in there??

Bock FX: pike double front, front double full to front lay, back 2.5 + front full, manna! Not quite flat, but presses out of it, back 1.5 to Rudi, triple full, the wind seems out of their sails.

Cuba’s Vergara on vault, piked Roche, not even close

De la Cruz, relatively simple Rudi compared to his teammates but very clean successful vault!

Malone FX: pike double front, double double, two and a half twist backwards to front 1/1, split press, mistake on combo pass ended with tuck barani, triple full

Being compared to Vitaly Scherbo’s is never a compliment.

Dear Gymnastics Jesus, please let us hit pommel horse. Amen.

Rotation 5

Suzuki looks tight and just blew his dismount. No pirouette makes the press a B, which is the same as not have a dismount, -0.5 no dismount, -0.2 for the B vs. the intended D.

Rojo from VEN on high bar, Tak-1/2, straddled tkatchev, weiler kip, another Weiler to very late pirouette, he will get killed on angles.

Great kas-1/1 from Columbia on vault.

12.95 for Suzuki

Neff hit pommel horse! 🎉

SHOW BRODY ON POMMELS!

Leru off on pbars on a diam, Healy, sloppy straddle front, nice double front dismount!

Beckford on rings: interesting homna to straddle planche, nice FTDL

Joseph Fox, nice to see TTO shown, not the strongest ring routine, double tuck

USA need to average 13.817 on rings to beat Brazil, this will be a tall order, let’s go!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Rotation 6

Looking at rings scores from the day, the USA has a shot. If we were ending on high bar I’d be sweating.

My focus is waning, my keyboard apparently hates the letter V.

Just saw Fuenmayor on floor, fairly clean, some landings.

Also apparently the Venezuelan men need to learn how to sew. His flag is being held onto his singlet by half a safety pin.

Neff…rings…awkward landing on half in, full out.

Acuna on vault for Costa Rica, kas-1/2, tucked it down

Suzuki apparently scored a 13.2 on rings earlier.

Bock and Malone now need to average a 14.1 for gold.

13.65 for Bock.

Malone: Maltese, uprise planche, Kip to planche, t&p yamawakis to straddle L, double double.

This should secure the silver medal for the United States, no small feat!

Athlete just dismounted parallel bars with a front layout 1/1 off the side, which is a C, same as double tuck off side.

One more pbar routine, and my feed crapped out one final time.

Fitting end really.

Final results: 🥇Brazil 250.450 🥈United States 249.400 🥉Canada 246.725 4. Mexico 239.750 5. Colombia 237.900

Robert Neff won the day’s unofficial all-around by .15, Nory was second 82.350-82.200. Malone was the only other American AAer and qualified in 12th despite High Barmaggedon 2019.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this competition. The level of difficulty wasn’t at a World Championships Level per se, but everything I saw looked safe & secure, I was especially impressed by the “underdeveloped” countries.

So that’s my first blog. If you read this far, let me know. I’ll be very flattered/impressed.
